Cake Batter “Puppy Chow”

13 Oct

Many of you are probably familar with the Chex mix treat that is often made at Christmas, sometimes called “Puppy Chow,” “Reindeer Food,” or “Muddy Buddies.” It is Chex cereal with a melted chocolate chips/peanut butter coating….all covered in powdered sugar. Amazing. Addicting. Great in every way.

Until I set up at the Farmer’s Market last weekend, I had no idea there was a new version of this floating around. It’s a Cake Batter flavored Puppy Chow. Apparently it’s all over Pinterest. Who knew?  *I wish I knew. Don’t have much time for it these days.*

Anyways, I had to try this for myself. I looked up several recipes and there are a fewvariations. Here’s what I came up with after tweaking a couple of them.

In a small(ish)  bowl, whisk together 1 cup of cake mix and 1/2 cup powdered sugar.

Put 6 cups of Chex cereal into a large bowl (I used the rice Chex).

In the microwave, melt an 11 ounce bag of white chocolate chips. Pour this over the Chex cereal and stir to coat. Quickly….before the white chocolate sets….stir in 4-5 tablespoons of sprinkles.

Doesn’t this picture just make you want to smile? 🙂

Place the white chocolate covered Chex into a large plastic storage container with a well fitting lid. Pour in the cake mix/powdered sugar mix and shake well. It’s that easy! You’re all done. 🙂 It really does taste  like cake batter, and you can lick the bowl because it doesn’t have raw eggs. 😀

I brought some to share with my students and they LOVED it. Six of them asked me to give them the recipe so they could ask their moms to make it at home. 😀 So cute. I’m going to make them more next week, and I think I’ll use Halloween themed sprinkles, just for funsies.

Try it.
You’ll like it.
